My least favorite part of Hip-Hop

I am always interested in new, upcoming artists and I always love to see what they have to offer. What kind of flow they have, the beats they use, etc. There are plenty of young artists I enjoy. Denzel Curry, Anderson .Paak, an occasional Lil Uzi, Big K.R.I.T, etc. But there is one artist who is making a splash in the rap game that confuses me. He goes by the name of Lil Yachty. Lil Yachty is an interesting, unique character. He was made in southern Georgia and is currently only 19 years old. He also is known as 'Lil Boat' or just 'Boat'.

His style of music is very very unique. He isn't very lyrically gifted at all, he has even admitted it. He was quoted saying "not every song has to be crazy, if the beat is hard, people will listen to it." He also was quoted saying, "I don't honestly" after being asked if he takes Hip-Hop seriously. So he's just having fun with it, I respect that. I do have to admit, although I'm not a fan of his music, his beats definitely slap, and his melodies are very catchy.

Earlier in the quote from before, he also quoted saying he doesn't consider himself a rapper. The quote continues, "I dunno. I would say artist." After being asked what he was.

So you might be asking, why do you dislike his music so much? There's a few reasons. One reason is the lack of meaning in his songs. There's just no message or meaning that an artist like Kendrick or Cole have in their songs, making their songs equivalent to a drug to me. Another reason I don't listen to him is how wack it sounds. I mean, honestly, it just sounds awful. I can understand if people listen to him while partying or whatever, but listening to him daily? No way. Believe me, I've given him a shot, I've listened to both his mixtapes in complete, and it's just not my thing.

But maybe I'm just being too serious too enjoy his music. But as far as I know, it's complete garbage. I have nothing against him or his fans, it's all just my opinion. And if you're shocked that I said this about him, you should know by know, this blog is very biased. I respect what he's doing and his success, I'll just stick to the good stuff.

Logic announces new album title 'AfricAryaN'

Earlier this week, Logic announced the title of his new studio album. He said in an interview that it will be called 'AfricAryaN' (as of right now). The title was revealed on an episode of Dan Harmon's "Harmontown" podcast. Logic continued to explain what this title means. "It's about me being black and white, and seeing life from two sides, and about that cultural evolution and how you can go from the darkest of skin to the lightest if skin." The quote continues saying, "At the end of the (explicit) day, we all have so many different ethnicities in our blood, no matter how pure we think we are."

In a statement to DJ Booth, Logic's managment said that the title "AfricAryaN" is a working title and that "nothing is solidified yet." I do like the title a lot and I love the concept.

Earlier this year, back in April, Logic met with Rolling Stone for an interview debuting unreleased bars from his new album. Check out the video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQmZKnrS3rI

"I feel the Aryan in my blood, it's scarier than a Blood
Been looking for holy water now I'm prayin' for a flood
Feel like time passing me by, slower than a slug
While this feelin' inside of my body's feelin' like a rug"

He mentions 'Aryan' in these short lyrics found from 'Studio Ambience At Night: Malibu".

If you know anything about Logic, you should know that he never likes speaking on race during his albums. Him being black and white, he feels that everyone should be accepted in society, no matter what race, religion, etc. But just by the title, you could guess that he will be rapping about race.

This album was rumored to release "late 2017", but I definitely think it will be coming out sooner than that. We've already heard snippets of the new album, as well as a title. Knowing Logic, he will drop it as a surprise sometime in 2017. I would expect sooner rather than later.

I can't wait for this drop. As a full time Logic fan, I can't wait to see what he has in store for another possible concept studio album. Stay tuned and stay woke.

The Weeknd Drops Album Title and Cover along with single 'Starboy'

Yesterday, September 21, The Weeknd announced his new studio album "Starboy", along with debuting the cover art of the album and dropping a single "Starboy". Starboy features 18 tracks, with "False Alarm" and "Starboy" being the only 2 songs with titles.

Me personally, I was ecstatic when The Weeknd dropped this information. I have been waiting for new music since his last album. His last album is full of dark beats, and amazing vocals. In my opinion, "Beauty Behind the Madness" was easily one of the best albums of 2015. Every song gave a very cool vibe and had this on repeat to this day. I hope that his new album is just as good or better than his last, and I believe it'll be just as great. The Weeknd always delivers and I can't wait to see him do it again.

After listening to his new single, "Starboy" I can already tell The Weeknd is back and better than ever. He teams up with Daft Punk for this song, giving it an electric feel. The Weeknd's vocals are incredible, along with Daft Punk's vocals during the chorus. Although Daft Punk's vocals are a small part of the song, it gives it almost a futuristic feel and I really like the sound.

The Weeknd also debuted his new hair. He no longer has the "palm tree" hair, he cut it to a clean, almost flat top haircut. I love the new look to The Weeknd.

Overall I can't wait for this new album, expect a review on the album shortly after the release.

THat Part Lyricism

Check out Kendrick's verse to THat Part (Black Hippy Remix). Bars and bars of rhymes. Over 70 rhymes during Kendrick's part. Simply incredible.
Also the entire song is amazing, I just wanted to focus on this verse.

"Deny me from an Ivy school
Applyin' me to the street I slept
I quietly had to hold this tool
Reminding me of the block I repped
The turf I stepped, the church and the earth I blessed"

ARTISTS ON MY WATCH

Hopefully 2016 ends the way it started, with constant drops that were all unbelievable. Kendrick, Drake, ScHoolboy Q, Wale, Logic, and much much more all dropped new projects. This is a list of artists I'm keeping my eye on to possibly drop new music in 2016.

Childish Gambino - Pharos
It's been a while since Gambino dropped anything new, (besides his new TV show 'Atlanta', which is great so far, by the way). And Gambino's new album Pharos is expected sometime in 2016. I love Gambino's unique style and bars. I would say its safe to expect 'Pharos' sometime in October or early November and I can't wait.

Kendrick Lamar / Black Hippy - TBA
There's been no new news about a possible drop from Kendrick but this is an assumption I'm making. I would assume that the new album would come out closer to 2017 or just in 2017, but it's on this list because it's Kendrick and how can you not be excited for his new album. We'll keep an eye out.

As for Black Hippy, we are all expecting a drop from Black Hippy and we're just waiting on a date. Whether it's an album, a single, or a mixtape, I can't wait to see what's in store from Black Hippy.

Mac Miller - The Divine Feminine
Mac Miller's new album drops September 16th, 2016, which is only 3 days away today. I am very excited for this album even though GO:OD AM ended up being a little less than I expected it to be. Based on the singles from the album so far, (Dang! (feat. Anderson .Paak, We (feat. CeeLo Green) and My Favorite Part (feat. Ariana Grande)) I have high hopes for this project.

Logic - TBA
Logic just recently dropped his hype mixtape 'Bobby Tarantino' for his fans while he works on his album. While I see his album coming out in 2017, he could surprise everyone and drop it late 2016. Logic is one of my favorites and I can't wait to see how his album comes out and what direction he takes towards it.

Meek Mill - DC4
Meek's last 3 Dreamchasers mixtapes were some of the best "murda" music I've ever heard. And I expect nothing less from DC4. As much hate as Meek gets, there is something so enticing about his music. I would expect DC4 either as early as the end of September or as late as December, but I can almost guarantee it will come out in 2016. He recently gave us a sneak peek with the drops of 4-4 and 4-4 Pt. 2, with songs like Gave Em Hope, War Pain, and Pray for Em. He comes with aggressiveness and a will to be respected again. And he'll be back with his same style and same aggressive bars, it's just a question as to when it finally drops.

MIXTAPE MONDAY, THE CLASSICS - THE WARM UP

Not many mixtapes were on my radar as of the past couple of weeks, so I figured I would bring it back to one of my favorites of all time. J. Cole's 'The Warm Up' in my eyes, was the opening to Cole's professional career. It really separated him from the okay music, to what's real. It launched him to stardom with the massive love he received from this particular mixtape. And if you listen to J.Cole enough, you should know he has never dissapointed. From The Warm Up to Friday Night Lights, to Sideline Story to Sinner and 2014 Forest Hills, he took off with this mixtape and didn't look back.

This mixtape was released June 15th, 2009 and has been downloaded more than 600,000 times and has been listened to more than 1,000,000 times since. J. Cole was signed to Roc Nation after Jay-Z heard the track, "Lights Please" before The Warm Up was even released. One of the greatest ever, Jay-Z saw a lot in a young Cole, and was so right about him. Cole showed loads of potential throughout his mixtapes and finally came into his own during his albums. A year after The Warm Up was released Cole won the UMA Male Artist of the Year thanks to this mixtape.

Some of my personal favorites off this mixtape of 22 songs are Welcome, Grown Simba, Lights Please, Dead Presidents II, I Get Up, Dollar and a Dream II, Knock Knock, that was produced by THE Kanye West, Last Call and Losing My Balance. To be honest, the entire album is just amazing. The tone of Cole really shows how much he wanted to be successful, and he made it.

I give this album an easy 9.3 out of 10, and if you couldn't already tell, Cole is one of my favorite artists if not my favorite.

Just waiting for a new drop...

Song of the Day 9/9/16

MY SONG OF THE DAY

GOOSEBUMPS - TRAVIS SCOTT FT. KENDRICK LAMAR

'Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight'

On September 2nd, 2016, Travis Scott dropped possibly his best studio album to date called 'Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight' through his label Grand Hustle. Travis features 13 artists on his album, including big names like, Kid Cudi, 21 Savage, Kendrick Lamar, Bryson Tiller, Young Thug, and The Weeknd. Only a week old today, I could easily see this album going platinum come later this year. After his debut album 'Rodeo', I was very disappointed and wasn't actually planning on buying his sophomore album, but after a few listens, I instantly changed my mind.  I found 'Rodeo' very underwhelming and didn't live up to the hype. Travis delivers a different type of style in his new album. Though he is considered "trap" his delivery makes me feel like he is verging away from his normal style. I personally don't like 80% of trap music, but his album definitely had a different sound. The production on this is great, it seems like Travis really took this album seriously, and gave it his all.

I have not stopped listening to this album since I bought it. The beats, the lyrics, the features, all forms into one well put together album and in my opinion had Travis' best songs on it. Some of my favorites are Goosebumps ft. Kendrick Lamar, Way Back ft. Kid Cudi and Swizz Beats and also features a vocal sample of "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)... performed by Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Kanye West, First Take ft. Bryson Tiller, and Wonderful ft. The Weeknd.

I give this album a solid 8.4 out of 10 and definitely recommend picking it up over the weekend.

The Culture

Welcome to my new blog, Street Poetry. On this blog I will discuss all things hip hop. And write about the past, present, and future of hip hop. I will keep you informed on new releases of albums, and mixtapes. Along with those topics I will give my opinions on new artists, along with all new music. I have always loved the classics, Pac, Big, Tribe etc. The 90s was really the golden age of hip hop and I plan on discussing many classics, in my Throwback Thursday segment. I am excited to start this up and keep the hip hop world running. I love listening, talking, and learning about the hip hop culture. I just love finding new artists and new music and always keeping an open mind to find the best music. I plan on speaking about radio time for artists, and who should and shouldn't be getting the attention they receive. Keep in mind that this blog will be almost completely biased, so don't get offended if I rip on one of you're favorite artists. This is Street Poetry, you're number one source for all things hip hop.
